Have You Done Your Spring HVAC Maintenance Yet?

Remember when we were kids and we longed for the day when no one would make us do anything, and we could do whatever we wanted?

Too bad our 10-year-old selves can’t see the number of chores we have to do on a regular basis just so that we don’t have problems to deal with later.

Like this time of year. It’s finally nice out. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the breeze is warm. But are we out, relaxing in the patio? No, we’re changing the oil on the lawn mower and cleaning up the mess that winter left. Spring is great, but it brings its own set of responsibilities with it.

Spring HVAC Maintenance

Like air conditioner maintenance. It’s an easy job to put off, because there are so many pressing tasks to do. The backyard lawn keeps growing visibly until you deal with it. Air conditioners run without complaint, until they refuse to run at all.

But, as we all learn as adults, we have do chores ahead of time to avoid having to do even more annoying chores later. And it’s a fact of life that if you don’t do your preventative maintenance, your AC will break down on the hottest weekend of the summer and you’ll have to swelter through it or pay after-hours fees.

How To Do Spring Maintenance on Your HVAC Unit

Doing spring AC maintenance isn’t too dirty or terrible a job. It consists of three parts:

  1. Check over and clean off the exterior unit of your A/C. It should be free of all dirt and debris, and not have any encroaching shrubbery closer than two feet. You should also give it a rinse with a hose or blow it off with an air compressor.
  2. Change your filter in the house. Hopefully you’ve been doing this all along, but if you haven’t, now is the perfect time.
  3. Kick on your A/C to make sure it starts. You might not have had the need to use it yet, so let’s make sure it works before you need it.

If you didn’t do this in the fall, you may want to have a HVAC technician come to your house and do a quick tune-up and preventative maintenance check. A technician will be able to check the coolant levels and ensure that the unit is working efficiently. This is a very cost effective service and a small price to pay for peace of mind.
